The Hilton Head area is located in Beaufort County, South Carolina and is considered to be the second largest barrier island on the eastern seaboard. This area is home to an abundance of unique natural wildlife, including deer, alligators, many species of birds, and the endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtle. The Coastal Discovery Museum of South Carolina spearheads the annual Sea Turtle Protection Project from May through October, which seeks to both assist the sea turtles in their annual migration and nesting rituals and to educate the public about the species.
In terms of cultural experiences, the Arts Council of Beaufort County sponsors many events and programs. The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra also puts on many performances year round, as does the Hilton Head Choral Society, a non profit open to the community organization. Other annual cultural events include the Gullah celebration, honoring the islands indigenous culture. The Gullah were the among some of the first inhabitants of the area, and still live there today. Other events include the annual Shelter Cove WineFest, and the Celebrity Golf Tournament.
